With three- and four-digit numbers, the mistake is trying to picture the paper sum and babysit a row of carries. Drop all of that. Start from the biggest place value and keep a single running total.
3,480 + 2,610: the thousands make 5,000, the hundreds push it to 6,080, the rest brings 6,090. At every step you are holding one number, not a stack, and you have a ballpark from the very first move.
Deal with carries the moment they show up
When a column spills over, just fold the extra straight into your running total. There is no separate carry digit to park and remember, because you have already absorbed it.
