A worked example
2,940 ÷ 68: round 68 to 70. Then 2,940 ÷ 70 is 42, and the true answer sits just above that at about 43.
Make the divisor round first
Division gets a lot friendlier the moment you are dividing by something clean. For 2,940 ÷ 68, bump 68 up to 70. Now 2,940 ÷ 70 is 42, and since you rounded the divisor up, the real answer sits a hair above, around 43.
Which way you rounded tells you which way to lean afterwards. A bigger divisor makes the answer smaller, so the truth is a touch higher than what you got.
Only chase the digits you need
Estimation is about doing just enough. If the answer choices are miles apart, one or two significant figures decides it and the rest is wasted effort.
Before you start grinding, ask how close the options actually are. Tight ones earn another digit. Loose ones do not.
